RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) is the associate-degree-level credential, designed for hands-on technical roles in health information management. RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) is the bachelor's-degree-level credential, designed for management, director, and executive roles in health information and informatics. Both require graduation from a CAHIIM-accredited program. RHIT is the appropriate first credential for most entry-level and mid-level HIM professionals; RHIA is typically pursued by those moving into management or pursuing CHDA, CCS, or CPHIMS specialty credentials. Both credentials require re-certification every two years.
