The BLS 2024 median annual wage for medical assistants is $44,200 with +20% projected job growth through 2034. Certified MAs typically earn $2,000–$6,000 more per year than non-certified MAs doing the same work. Most MAs work in physician offices and outpatient clinics (65%), but roles also exist in hospitals, urgent care centers, specialty clinics (cardiology, dermatology, orthopedics), and telehealth companies. Certification also opens pathways to specialization (ophthalmic MA, podiatric MA) and supervisory roles. The CMA credential requires re-certification every 60 months through continuing education or re-examination.
